Islamic art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan's collection of Islamic art, which ranges in date from the seventh to the nineteenth century, reflects the great diversity and range of Islamic culture. Nearly 12,000 objects have been assembled at the Metropolitan from as far westward as Spain and Morocco and as far eastward as Central Asia, India, and Southeast Asia. The collection includes some of the finest Islamic carpets in existence.

After a comprehensive eight-year construction project, The Metropolitan Museum of Art re-opened its galleries for the Department of Islamic Art, in a newly renovated space of nearly 19,000 square feet (1,800 square meters). The new installation will emphasize the rich diversity of the Islamic world and its artistic traditions by underscoring the many distinct cultures within its fold.
