Design inspired by a carpet page from the book of Durrow (Gospel manuscript from the second half of the 7th Century). The Eagle is usually the symbol of the evangelist John, but in the book of Durrow it symbolizes the evangelist Mark (usually depicted by an image of a lion). The design uses a variety interlace, which is thought to have an apotropaic function because of its perceived ability to trap evil. Such pages could have been intended to protect the holy text, as they are found at the beginning of each gospel.
