Rugs and carpets are basic necessities in the daily life of Tibetans. The high-quality weaving and colorful, stylized patterns have nearly universal appeal. Tibetan rugs are typically used for meditation, as mats to sit on, as door and window covers, as horse saddles, as bedcovers, or for wrapping pillars. Traditional carpet designs generally reflect aspects of Tibetan culture and religion, and Chinese motifs, including images of dragons, are also dominant design elements in Tibetan carpets.
