Large, rectangular wool carpet made of locally produced wool and dyes from Pirot in south-west Serbia, once the most important carpet-making center in the Balkans. Known as kilims because they are tapestry-woven flat-weaves rather than pile rugs. Design includes knotted fringes at each end and repeated natural motifs set in narrow and wide oblongs within an outer red border. Approximately late nineteenth century.
